Our Story

Apple Tree Medical evolved from a solo GP Practice operated by Dr EJ (Jim) Watson. Jim was working at Wallamurra (an Aboriginal word meaning 'camp by rushes') on Abbott Street and retired in 2004. Dr Liz Chappel took over his practice and due to a redevelopment at the orginal site the clinic was relocated to an old Queenslander located at 443 Draper Street.

Over the years that followed Dr Liz Chappel has overseen the growth of the practice into her vision of how a General Practice should be, focused on patient centric continuous care, a place providing the sort of care you'd want for your family

We offer excellent facilities for GPs to run their business in both Cairns and Smithfield. Light airy consulting rooms, most with outward facing windows.
A fabulous support team including onsite IT support, modern equipment and accomodating environment. We have an onsite midwife, mental health nurses, psychologists and other support services

As well as developing a fabulous working environment we also focused on the patient experience. First impressions count so we developed welcoming reception areas to compliment our consulting rooms.

Culture Matters

Working environment is important but we think workplace culture is even more important.

We know working in a General Practice is at times tough. With this in mind we have developed a team based culture where all our team members feel valued and supported so they can come to work knowing that someone has got their back. We do our best to bring the team together a couple of times a year to share some down time. Whether it is something physically demanding like putting a team together for the Cairns 7 Marathon Festival or something more creative like a Painting Party there is always something for everyone (and their family) to join in.
